On July 23rd, Lawrence Patrick Noonan defied the poet, Dylan Thomas, and went “gently into that good night”. Larry was well known for his life-long dedication to assisting people with special needs. Larry is also well known for being full-tilt and copper riveted in his commitment to his vision. When he was a young man working at the Anaconda smelter an old-timer advised him to only worry about the front of the shovel, the back he explained will take care of itself. Larry subsequently spent the rest of his working days assuring that the front of his shovel was filled with progress for the communities he loved. People all over Montana knew his work on their behalf. He was a true “Made in Montana” product. Born and raised in Butte to Edward and Sara Noonan, disciplined by the Irish Catholic Brothers, trained by Coach Petrino in the art of football, inducted in the Hall of Fame at Eastern Montana College, served the state through 4 separate governors and subsequently built one of the largest non-profit organizations in Montana, AWARE Inc., that is dedicated to bringing dignity and hope to thousands of Montanans every day. Larry’s commitment extended not just to his job, but to his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Jaci; his children, Pat, Andrea, and Bryan; his step-children, Beth, Brian, and Bobby; his eight grandchildren; and his three brothers and two sisters; and many other family and friends. A funeral service is scheduled on July 31st at 11:00 am at St. John’s Church at 1500 Majors St. in Butte, followed immediately afterward with a reception at the Lawrence P. Noonan Center for Excellence in Anaconda at 200 Polk St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to AWARE Inc. in honor of Lawrence Noonan (205 E. Park Ave, Anaconda, MT, 59711).
