Obituary Lloyd Benjamin Thompkins, Jr. 72, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2020, at Jack D. Weiler Hospital Jon Einstein College of Medicine. Mr. Thompkins was a Charlestonian from birth to the late Lloyd Benjamin Thompkins, Sr. and Marguerite Pate Thompkins. He was known as “Tommy” by his family. He graduated from North Charleston High School with honors and was a member of the Nochas Marching Band where he played the Clarinet. His major accomplishment during high school was his perfect score on the SAT. This secured him a full scholarship to the University of South Carolina where he majored in music performance. Lloyd was a member of the USC Concert Choir under the direction of Arpad Darazs and a member of the Phil Mu Alpha Fraternity. He played the Oboe in the USC Marching Band and the USC Orchestra. After graduation, he attended Brevard School of Music. In 1970 he won the South Carolina Regional Metropolitan Opera Auditions which landed him a place in the finals in Atlanta, GA. He then moved to New York to further his studies and career where he received his Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. He was the Music Director/Organist/Choir Director and Cantor at St. Clare’s of Assisi Catholic Church in Bronx, NY, a position he held dearly for 38 years. Lloyd loved his church family, church school, and most of all, his choir. Lloyd resided in Manhattan and the Bronx for the past 50 years. Lloyd was an accomplished organist, pianist, instrumentalist, and baritone soloist. He was fluent in multiple languages and proficient in Latin. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the hospital staff, including Dr. May, Dr. Lisa Brown, Nurse, Sonya Gaine, secretary staff, Mary Peters and Marie Frimpong.
