Sophia M. Roffe 1925-2019 Old Forge Sophia M. Roffe, 93, of Old Forge, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at the Katherine Luther Residential Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Clinton. She was born on November 17, 1925 in Lowville, NY, the daughter of William and Calista (Smith) McNally. Sophie graduated from Town of Webb Schools and furthered her education at State Teachers College Geneseo, NY and received a Master’s Degree in 1958. On March 27, 1967 she was united in marriage to Howard L. Roffe at St. Bartholomew’s Church and shared a blessed union of 5 years. Howard Roffe passed away on June 26, 1972. Sophie was employed as a Library Media Specialist: State University Teachers College Plattsburg, NY, Ausable Forks, NY, New Rochelle, NY, Garden City, NY, Summer Reading Enrichment Program, Town of Webb Schools, Old Forge, NY and Brighton Central Schools in Rochester, NY, until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church. Sophie always enjoyed a round of golf and was a member of Thendara Golf Club. She was active in the Arts and for years volunteered and supported the local art center, VIEW. She was very involved with St. Bartholomew’s Church where she served as the Religious Education Director for many years. She served on the Bishop’s Pastoral Council and supported seminarians in the Diocese of Ogdensburg. Sophie was acknowledged by the Bishop of Ogdensburg for her service to her parish and the Diocese at large. She received the “Sharing the Light of Faith Award”, that is proudly displayed at our family restaurant. Surviving are her sister, Theresa (Tee) McNally Winslow, Old Forge and her family Margaret and Robin Montgomery, Diane Gaige, Barbara Winslow and David Winslow, all of Old Forge; Edward “Spin” and Debbie Winslow, Tonawanda, NY; Laurie Worden Winslow, Port Leyden, John and Sarah Winslow, Inlet and Ryan and Jocelyn Winslow and their children, Ezra and Skylar, Old Forge, NY. She was predeceased by her sister, Bea McNally, nephews, Charles B., Jr. and William Winslow; great nephew, Adam Winslow and nephew-in-law, Chris Gaige. Sophie’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to the local HASCA team for helping Sophie over the years while at home, and the staff of the Katherine Luther Residential Care, especially the Applewood unit for their care and compassion. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on July 29th from St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church, 103 Crosby Blvd., Old Forge at 11 am. There will be no public visitation. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Arrangements are with Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc., 128 Fern Ave., Old Forge. Remembrances in Sophie’s name may be made to VIEW, The Old Forge Library, HASCA of Old Forge or St. Bartholomew’s Church.
