Richard’s Obituary Cobleskill (Schoharie County): Richard A. Self, 88 of Gilmore Dr., formerly of Schoharie passed away Sunday, July 14th at his home under the loving care of his family and hospice. Dick was born April 30, 1931 in Wallingford, CT a son of Bertram and Doris (Becroft) Self. He attended the Wallingford School and later learned the trades in carpentry and construction. He worked for C N Flagg Co in Meriden, CT as a heavy equipment operator and also welding. He moved to the area and worked for General Electric Co in Schenectady until establishing his own business; Self and Son Construction in Schoharie where he worked tirelessly enjoying every moment. He loved backhoe work, welding, water skiing and boating on the lake in Connecticut. Richard also served his country during the Korean war in the US Navy sailing aboard the USS Taconic before his honorable discharge in 1955. He was a longtime member and Deacon of the Valley Bible Baptist Church in Cobleskill. Survivors include his wife; Alice (Diamond) Self whom he married April 7, 1956, his daughter; Terry (Timothy) Wood of New Salem, 8 grandchildren; Joshua, Lyndi, Caleb, and Leureah Cummings, Isaiah, Jacob, Elizabeth, and Benjamin Wood, his siblings; Eda Stender of Northford, CT, May Wood of Florida, Jimmy Self of Wallingford, CT and Grace Diamond of Schoharie along with several nieces and nephews. Dick was predeceased by a son, Todd P. Self on February 26, 2018 and a brother, Bertrum. A period of visitation will be held from 9-11 AM on Friday, July 19th at the Valley Bible Baptist Church, 745 Mineral Springs Road, Cobleskill followed by a memorial service at 11 AM. Interment will be private.
