Michael Kizinski Gainer, 86, of Latrobe, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2019. He was born in St. Louis, MO on February 26, 1933, and was the son of Patrick Ward and Antionette Kizinski Gainer. Mr. Gainer was professor emeritus and the former chair of the Saint Vincent College Department of Physics where he taught for 35 years. He was the author of several astronomy books. As a passionate educator, Mr. Gainer continued teaching astronomy well into his retirement at the Lifelong Learning Institute at Carnegie-Melon University. He also served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his seven children, Kathryn (Ronald “Red”) Baughman, Thomas (Pamela), John (Gioconda),Mary (Scott) Corliss, Cynthia (William) Matrisch, Suzanne (Eric) Josephson and Daniel (Margaret) Gainer; seventeen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; brother Thomas and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his former spouse Julia Scarcelli Gainer, his eldest son, Michael, infant son Paul, brothers Patrick and Nicholas; sister Miriam Goder and two infant grandsons. Private services will be held in Tanner, WV at a future date. Kreamer & Lum Funeral Home & Crematory, Jonestown, is honored to serve the family.
