Mary Louise’s Obituary MARY LOU GOODMAN Mary Louise Goodman, 94, of Elyria, died July 13, 2019 at The Abbewood, Elyria. Mary Louise was born November 29, 1924 in Ridgeville and has been an Elyria resident since 1935. She was a 1942 graduate of Elyria High School and married her high school sweetheart, Albert Goodman February 28, 1942. Albert was serving in the US Army, stationed near Aberdeen, Maryland. Mary Lou went to visit him, and he asked her to marry him. They applied for a marriage license in Bel-Air, MD. The expected certificate didn’t come the next day, nor the next. For three endless days, they waited, and finally, on a Friday, the all-important letter arrived. Chaplain R. E. Young had agreed to tie the knot for them on Friday, but he had not been notified of the black out at the time. With everything in order, the two set out together for the chapel, but found themselves blacked out and the chaplain being somewhere else. They were at a loss as to what to do and spoke to Mrs. McCracken, the hostess at the guest house where Mary Lou was staying. Mrs. McCracken appealed to Magistrate Delgar in Aberdeen, who in turn appealed to Rev. Giller, since a Justice of the Peace is not allowed to perform the ceremony in the state of Maryland. Shortly after midnight in the small hours of a Saturday morning, Mary Lou became the bride of Albert. She loved to sew and for many years worked out of her home making custom draperies and window treatments for C. H. Merthe Company, Higbee Co. and the Furniture Shop. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and enjoyed golf, boating, fishing, dancing, family cookouts and afternoons poolside with her family and friends. Mary Lou is survived by her children; Mary Ann Bowen (Tom) of LaGrange, Gary Goodman (Leslie) of Elyria, Ronald Goodman (Mary) of Bellaire, and Lynda Mansfield (Gordon Dupree, fiancé) of Elyria; seven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Albert in 2015; parents Roland and Jeanette (nee Wheeler) Blaine; sister Betty Hughes-Hanna; and a brother Robert Blaine. Mary Lou’s family would like to thank Hospice of the Western Reserve, the staff at The Abbewood, and First Light Home Care for their help in caring for Mary Lou. Friends will be received Thursday, July 18, 2019 from 11:00 am until the time of a 12:00 pm noon service at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. Reverend Bill Mugnolo will officiate. Burial will be in Fields Cemetery, North Ridgeville. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 1140 West River Road N., Elyria, Ohio 44035. Read More
