March 23 1931 July 16 2019 (age 88)
On Tuesday, the 16th of July, 2019, one of God’s choicest spirits crossed peacefully to the other side. We Are excited for her and the long awaited reunion with her loved ones especially our brother, Richie. Mary was born March 23, 1931, at home in Pleasant Grove, Utah, to Marjorie and Sanford “Lynn” Weeks. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Stanley, and her son John Richard, “Richie”. When she was in high school, she met the love of her life Bill Hoglund on a blind date. They were married in 1949 and sealed for time and all eternity in 1954 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Salt Lake Temple. They have been together for 70 years. She attended Pleasant Grove High School where she was very popular and involved in many activities. She was a flag bearer for the band and graduated in 1949. She was later selected to be in charge of a high school reunion. She worked for a short time at Smith Rexall Drug as a clerk. For Strawberry Days, 1939 she was chosen to be Miss Pleasant Grove. Her older brother, Stanley, pulled her in a wagon through the parade route. Mom loved Strawberry Days. Things came full circle in 1998, when Mary and Bill were chosen to be the Grand Marshalls of the parade. This was quite an honor for both of them. She was very excited and proud of this. Their granddaughter, Hillary, had the opportunity to ride with them. At an early age Mary learned how to work hard. This is a trait that has been with her all her life. She taught us to always “do our best” and “do it right”. She also taught us how to work hard and be able to feel the pride of a job well done. Her parent’s had a farm in Pleasant Grove. She loved spending time with her Dad, helping with his bees, wood cutting, and getting the fruit and honey ready to go to the market. Mom learned how to cook, sew, and garden. Anything that Mom did she put her heart and soul into it. If she was given a job or task it would be done to the best of her ability. Mom supported Dad in all of his many endeavors. She was definitely the “woman” behind the man. They were a good team. Dad ran Pleasant Grove city’s recreation department out of our house for many years. During that time, she was his secretary fielding many of his calls, counting the money from the pool, and other programs every night without fail. After Dad retired, they loved to travel and travel they did all over the world. They went to all but 1 of the 50 states. They went to Russia, Turkey, Italy and Europe. Russia was one of Mom’s favorite places. She worked tirelessly taking care of our “special needs” brother, Richie. He was a very special spirit in our home and was loved dearly. She never complained even though he was the seventh child and required a lot of special care. She was always interested in history and “recording the facts”. She was a member of the DUP for 30 years. When asked to be their historian she gladly accepted. This was a good fit and she served for 17 years. During this time she put together countless albums about her beloved DUP and Pleasant Grove. Mom had many interests, talents and hobbies. Two things stand out as very important to her. Working in her yard and decorating. She had an immense knowledge of plants, and all things to do with gardening. Subsequently, their yard was chosen as “The Prettiest Yard of the City”. She faithfully decorated for every holiday. She loved her house to look festive. Our brother Richie loved the decorations and would let mom know before each holiday that it needed to get done. She always worked the hardest at Christmas. It was important to her that each of us had a good Christmas. Mom was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She loved her Savior. Mom had a strong testimony of the gospel and served faithfully in many callings over the years including primary president, visiting teacher and compassionate service leader. Mary had a knack and love for people and a great ability to listen. Mom is survived by her husband, children: Michael of Herriman; Linda Ferguson of American Fork; Gary (Collett) of Lindon; Kathy, Kerry (Marlene) of Colorado Springs and Sharon, Las Vegas. Mom had a substantial posterity of 37 grandkids and 45 great grandkids. The family wishes to express they’re thanks to all who have had us in your prayers, came to visit, brought food and flowers, or in any way helped our Mom. A very special thanks to our sister, Sharon who has tirelessly took care of Mom and Dad through many difficult times. She never complained and would say she “felt Blessed” that she could care for Mom. The family expresses a very special thanks to all those who helped her so much at Osmond Assisted Living. This is a unique facility with skilled, caring and tender-hearted staff. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 19, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the Pleasant Grove First Ward Chapel, 275 East 500 South, Pleasant Grove where family and friends may attend a viewing from 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. prior to the services. Interment will be in the American Fork City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinmortuary.com.
