Kraig’s Obituary On July 2, 2019, Kraig Wolstenholme Grubaugh transitioned from this life to the next. Kraig was born to H. Darrell and Rachel Wolstenholme Grubaugh on April 23, 1947. He had a stable, happy childhood and the house his father built for the family was the only home he remembered. He attended St. Ann’s Catholic Elementary School and went on to graduate in 1965 from Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City. He became a Browning Scholar and graduated from the University of Utah in 1970 with a BS in Mining Engineering. Kraig would later receive an MS in Hydrology from the University of Idaho in 2010. He married Judy Alice Shoemaker in October 1975, and they moved immediately afterwards to Penn State University where he would earn an MS in Mining Engineering in 1979. While living in State College, PA, their son, Dagan Grubaugh was born and joined step-sister, Heather Fitzpatrick to complete the family. Kraig was a mining engineer through and through. After Penn State, career opportunities took Kraig and the family to Texas; then back to Utah, Arizona and Colorado. In 1991 he had the opportunity to work overseas in what he called his dream job. He did contract engineering in Dublin, Ireland; Vancouver, British Columbia; South Africa; Ghana; Mali; Burkina Faso; and Cameroon. He and Judy vacationed in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Egypt, Zimbabwe, and Amsterdam. He loved to travel and made life long friends wherever he went. Although Kraig attended Catholic schools, he never joined a church until he joined the Episcopal Church in 1980. For years, Kraig sang with church choirs and continued to have an abiding love for choral music. In 1987 Kraig became a Soka Gakkai Buddhist because the practice aligned more closely with his deepest beliefs. Even though his career was demanding, in later years family became much more important, with weddings, births, holidays, and graduations. He would also give time and energy to programs such as the Boy Scouts, “Future City”, ski club, and Arbor Day “Plant a Tree” Day. Kraig also taught occasional lectures on engineering topics at the University of Utah and Idaho State University. In 2002, Kraig and Judy moved to Blackfoot to undertake the renovation of Judy’s childhood home. Kraig dove into re landscaping the yard and fixing up the old garage and quonset. He brought his many talents and expertise to all of those projects. He became a Master Gardener nurturing a native plant flower garden at the State fair. He was also active in the Society of Mining Engineers. These were some of the happiest years Kraig and Judy had together. Kraig and Judy were instrumental in the raising of two grandchildren, Sean and Asher. These children were a central focal point in Kraig’s later life, helping to full the painful void left by the death of son, Dagan. He deeply loved them and their mother, Heather. His legacy will go on through them. Kraig is survived by his wife, Judy of Blackfoot; sister, Pamela (Willi) Littig of Salt Lake City; brother, Kae Grubaugh of Kanosh, UT; step-daughter, Heather Fitzpatrick; and grandsons, Sean Lucas of Rangely, CO and Asher Lucas of Blackfoot. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and son, Dagan. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S Shilling Ave in Blackfoot. Kraig’s ashes will be laid to rest next to his parents in the Pleasant Green Cemetery in Magna, UT. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Society of Mining Engineering Scholarship fund, make checks payable to SME. Condolences may be shared at: www.hawkerfuneralhome.com. Read More
