Joyce’s Obituary Memorial services for Joyce E. Thompson, age 91, of Fairmont, Minnesota, will be held at a later date with inurnment at Wilmot, South Dakota. Joyce passed away peacefully on July 27, 2019, at Lakeview Methodist Nursing Home, Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, Fairmont, is in charge of arrangements. Joyce Elaine Cardwell was born on November 7, 1927, in Wilmot, South Dakota, the fourth child of Cecil and Eva (Wunschel) Cardwell. She was raised and educated in Wilmot with four brothers and five sisters. Joyce attended school in Wilmot through the 11th grade and at the age of 51 went on to complete her high school education, receiving her GED from Albert Lea High School, Albert Lea, Minnesota, in 1978. Early in 1943, she met the man, Darwin Thompson, who she would ultimately marry on September 21, 1945, at Peever, South Dakota. Joyce and Darwin were married for 68 years with Darwin passing on November 27, 2014. To this union, two daughters and two sons were born. Joyce was the consummate stay-at-home mom who was an accomplished seamstress as well as an excellent cook. Having grown up through the Depression era and the “Dirty 30’s,” her family was always amazed at how well she could feed them with just a single pound of ground beef and no one ever left her table feeling hungry. Joyce’s hobbies included crocheting, painting, and gardening which included canning the fruits of her labor. Joyce and Darwin lived in numerous towns across southern Minnesota as Darwin found employment. In 1984, following Darwin suffering a heart attack, they retired to Flandreau, South Dakota, where they lived until August 2003 when they moved to Fairmont to be closer to their daughters. In September 2018, Joyce moved to Ingleside Assisted Living Center and made many new friends there about whom she truly cared. At Ingleside, she renewed her love for reading, doing word search puzzles, assembling jigsaw puzzles, and watching the Food Network. The friends Joyce gained at Ingleside made her last year a truly happy experience. Joyce is survived by her four children, Denny (Jo) Thompson, Minot, North Dakota; Jeane (Bruce) Rudy and Linda Andino, both of Fairmont, Minnesota; and Douglas (Tee) Thompson, Minot, North Dakota, as well as four grandchildren, two great granddaughters, one great grandson, and one great great grandson. She is also survived by four sisters, Arlis Christensen, Bev (Chuck) Pederson, and Marlene (Terry) Johanson, all of Wilmot, South Dakota, and Millie Sommers of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Preceding Joyce in death were her husband Darwin; her parents; her sister, Marcella Lenssen; and her four brothers, Donald, Darold, Richard, and Dwane Cardwell. Joyce was a humble and caring mother who loved her children and grandchildren and life in general. She did not ask for much but gave everything and will be greatly missed by her family. Read More
