Bill Hermann: Loving husband, father and grandfather Roxbury Township: John W. “Bill” Hermann Jr. passed away peacefully on July 13, 2019 at Merry Heart Assisted Living in Succasunna. He was 91 years of age. Bill was born in Union City and grew up in West New York, New Jersey. He attended Memorial High School in West New York, and then graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a member of the “Broomstick Scientists” who pioneered the U.S. Army’s rocket program at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. In 1958, he married Jessie Miller of Maldon, Es, England, and with her moved to the Berkshire Valley section of Roxbury Township, where he lived most of his life. He worked as an ordnance engineer at Picatinny Arsenal for over 30 years. He attended St John’s Episcopal Church in Dover for many years, and later was warmly welcomed as a parishioner at St Anthony’s of Padua in Hackensack. He was predeceased by his wife Jessie in 2004 and brother Robert in 1998. He is survived by two children; Rosemary DaCunha and her husband Steven of West Hartford, CT, and David Hermann and his wife Joanne Gilles of Clinton, NY, and four grandchildren; Elisa DaCunha, Alexander Hermann, Batleen Hermann and Margaret Mawilong. Although raised in the city, Bill learned to love the outdoors during his youth through time spent with relatives in upstate New York, and later in life continued a keen interest in gardening and nature. He enjoyed traveling and was eager to explore places local and afar. He made frequent trips to England to visit family and friends. He began studying Spanish as an adult and happily pursued learning the language and culture for many of his adult years. Bill was devoted to his own family and also cherished his relationships with his nieces, nephews, cousins and more distant relatives. Anyone joining the family was always considered kin. He had many deep friendships that stood the test of time and geography. The family wishes to thank the staff at Merry Heart for the care they provided Bill while he was a resident at the assisted living facility, as well as the Sisters from the Community of St John Baptist in Mendham who supported him spiritually and included him in holiday gatherings. We also extend our deepest gratitude to Tammy Bayer, his dedicated and patient caregiver for many years. Visitation will be held 4-7pm on Friday July 19, at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S. Main St., Wharton. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30am on Saturday July 20 at the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, 72 Lodi St., Hackensack, NJ (www.SaintAnthonyHackensack.org). A private interment will follow at a later date.
