DURHAM: Joan Lee Harrison, 72, of Chapel Hill died at home on Sunday, June 30, 2019 after a prolonged illness. Joan was born in Greensboro, NC on October 18, 1946 to the late V. Robert H. Harrison, Sr. and Mary Lee Andrew. She graduated from Grimsley Senior High School in 1964 and UNC-G with a B.A. degree in Mathematics in 1968. She received a MAT degree from UNC-CH. Joan taught mathematics at Northern High School from 1968 to 1998. She was a superb teacher, well loved and respected by students and faculty. At the time of her retirement, students went to Durham School Board and requested that the hall Joan taught in be renamed Harrison Hall. After her retirement, she was the owner operator of Start to Finish Ceramics in Durham for almost 15 years. At the time of her death, she was employed as a contract worker with DPS creating class schedules at Northern High School. Joan was an avid Carolina football and basketball fan. She enjoyed golf, all types of puzzles, pets and traveling. She visited all 50 U.S. States. Joan is survived by her brothers, Victor Robert Harrison (Cheryl) of Winston Salem, N.C., John Harrison (Beth) of Raleigh, N.C.; nephews, Victor Harrison (Whitney) of Leesburg, V.A., Ben Harrison (Julie) of Asheville, N.C., Brian Harrison (Katie) of Charlotte, N.C.; niece, Marie Fogartie (James) of Johnston City, TN; great-niece, Collins Harrison; great-nephews, Ford Harrison, Jack Fogartie, Graham Harrison; and cousins, Nancy Follette, Mary Catherine Russell. She is also survived by her best friend of over 50 years, Ann Tietz, as well as many other close friends and her pet niece, Molly. Joan requested cremation and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 28th at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with Chaplain Donnie Addison officiating. The family wishes to express appreciation to the oncology, pulmonary and cardiac staff at NCMH in Chapel Hill for their excellent care, particularly Dr. Fran Collechio and Nurse Navigator, Betsy Blanton.
