Fletcher James “Fletch” Huskey was born September 25, 1933 to Floyd and Ethyl Tyson Huskey in Checotah, Oklahoma, the 6th of 13 children. The family moved to Arizona when Fletch was a child. He developed a love of airplanes and flying early. As a teen, he worked at a local airport refueling crop dusters, flew along when he had the opportunity, saved his money to buy his own plane and eventually took off when he felt he had practiced ground maneuvers long enough. He proudly served his country in the Army and later went on to fly professionally in Hawaii, cargo for US military as a civilian, and eventually commercially for Frontier Airlines. Following retirement from Frontier Airlines, he went on to own, breed, raise and train racing quarter horses full time. He continued as a breeder and owner until his death on June 17, 2019 at his home following a busy Father’s Day filled with social activities and an evening survey of his ranch from his golf cart with his daughter Sarah Huskey. Fletch met Mora Dickson at a college dance in Arizona, married in 1956 and added daughter Sarah while living in Honolulu. They lived in California and Colorado before settling in Texas in 1974. Fletch and Mora were married for 54 years until they were separated by her death in 2010. In addition to his wife and parents, Fletch is preceded in death by siblings Carl Lee Huskey, Audrey Verlin Huskey Moss, Ray C Huskey, Delma Elizabeth Huskey Eastridge, Anna Faye Huskey Ellesbury, Floyd Junior Huskey, twins Dan and Van Huskey, and Douglas McArthur Huskey. He is survived by daughter Sarah, brother Chester D. Huskey, sisters Joanne Huskey Salter and Vera Jean Huskey Bell, and many nieces and nephews. As a self-made and extremely hard-working man, Fletch had high expectations for himself and others, but he was very generous and willing to extend help to others and was known for fairness and honesty in all of his business and personal interactions. Fletch’s life was enriched by the friendship of many. His family would especially like to thank Dr. Doug Traver, Opal Baloga, Tony Naughton, and Blake and Lindsey Grey and their children Jackson and Lydia for their help and friendship in his last months. An event to celebrate the lives of Fletch and Mora Huskey will be held in Fall 2019. Memorial contributions may be made to Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund pdjf.org/ P.O.
