Mr. Edgar Alan Anderson, age 68, passed away Friday, July 12, 2019 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Sunday, July 14, 2019 at Fellowship Baptist Church. Rev. Wendy Peacock will officiate. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held Saturday, July 13, 2019 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Aldridge Funeral Services. Mr. Anderson was born May 2, 1951 in Columbus, GA. He was the son of the late Alexander McMillan Anderson and the late Edna May Purvis Anderson. He was a retired educator having taught Georgia History at Staley Middle School for many years and was honored as “Teacher of the Year.” Mr. Anderson wrote a column for the Americus Times Recorder. He was a member of The Sumter County Historic Society and served as their historian for many years. He authored several books, including “Remembering Americus, Georgia” and “The History of First Baptist Church.” He devoted countless hours of his time helping people with the history of Americus and Sumter County. Alan gave historical slide presentations about Sumter County to many civic organizations, churches, and schools. He helped with the presidential campaign for George McGovern and President Jimmy Carter. Mr. Anderson also worked for Habitat for Humanity. In 2014 he was awarded a place on the Walk of Fame at the Rylander Theater. Survivors include a sister, Mary Jo Anderson of Americus; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Sandy Anderson of St. Petersburg, FL; four nephews, David Andrew Anderson Jr., Alexander William Anderson, Matthew Alexander Simmons, Mark Edward Simmons Jr.; two great nieces, Rilyn Anderson, Kenna Anderson; and one great nephew, Quinn Anderson. Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter, 225 Second Street, East, Tifton, GA 31794.
