Dale Milton Friend, Chief Corpman, US Navy, Ret., 75, of Troy, husband of Marline Cantler Friend, died Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at his home. He was born in Tacoma, Washington to the late Frank Milton Friend and Florence Bierman Friend. Dale, a retired Chief Corpman with the United States Navy, honorably served his country in Vietnam and in May 1976, he assisted in the commissioning of the USS Tarawa (CV-40). His career spanned various locations, including Washington State, San Diego, CA and Bethesda, Maryland. He was a past Director of the Cardio-Pulmonary Lab for the Greenville Hospital System and a member of the Christian Church – Disciples of Christ in Maryland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bert Friend and a sister, Lucille Friend. Dale is survived by his wife, of 47 years, of the home; three daughters, Callie Friend of Tacoma, Washington, Lisa Horne (Dan) of Washington State, and Holly Brock (John) of Troy, SC; a brother, Bill Friend (Beverly) of Tacoma, Washington; a sister, Frances Hennessey of Washington State; and five grandchildren. All services will be private. Memorial contributions, in memory of Dale, may be sent to the Humane Society of McCormick County, PO Box 100, McCormick, SC 29835 or to the Wounded Warrior Project, 7020 AC Skinner Parkway, Suite 100, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
