Charlotte Dunn of 1634 Dorchester, aged 77, passed peacefully on July 26, encircled by her family within the comfort of her home. The daughter of Wesley H. and Bonnie M. Lightle entered this world in the spring of 1942. A born lover of learning, she ultimately earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Northeastern State University in Early Childhood Education (1964) and Reading Specialism (1965) respectfully. It was, in the midst of this, that she met and married George V. Dunn at Muskogee’s Calvary Baptist Church in 1962, and they began to start a family of their own. Her passion for education was indeed a calling and she followed it faithfully not only within Muskogee Public Schools for 37 years, but also in retirement as she continued to tutor her grandchildren along with the children in her neighborhood. She was also deeply devoted to all the members of her family – both blood and chosen – throughout the days of her life, nursing many of them as they were claimed by death and helping to raise others that were just starting life. As an avid gardener, lawnmower, fudge-maker, and walker, her life could hardly be described as idle; however, she generously gave her time and kindness to anyone she came across. As a devoted spouse, mother, and grandmother she was the salt and light of our family and she will be greatly missed as we attemptto follow in her rather large footsteps with our own lives. While she goes to join her parents Bonnie and Wesley, her sister Nell, and many more relatives – she leaves behind George V. Dunn, her beloved spouse of 57 years, two dearly loved sons G. Wesley Dunn and Alan V. Dunn and their spouses Jennifer and Charlotte, and four grandchildren who grew in the warmth of her love and pride: Jillian M. Dawes, Bailey R. Dunn, D. Kacee Dunn, and Corey A. Dunn. To honor her requests, there will be a Family Visitation on Wednesday, July 31, from 5:30PM to 7:30PM at Cornerstone Funeral Home on North York Street. The family requests that donations be made to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital in lieu of flowers as was her desire. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Charlotte A.
