Bernie was born December 7, 1931 in St. Louis. He is preceded in death by his father, Avery DeWitt, his mother, Blanche (Layman) DeWitt, and one brother, Leon DeWitt. Bernie is survived by his wife, Arlene DeWitt, sons – Richard (Dianna) DeWitt, Donald DeWitt, Stephen (Carol) DeWitt, Robert (Gretchen) DeWitt, one daughter, Sherry (Kevin) Collier and 9 Grandchildren. Bernie retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 37 years of employment. He proudly and honorably served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He was a parishioner at St. Robert Bellarmine Church and was anointed before his death. He was an avid history reader, gardener, and he liked to travel. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, July 25 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Church with a Celebration of Life luncheon immediately following the Mass. All family and friends are welcome to attend. Memorial donations can be made in his name to St. Vincent DePaul or SSM Hospice.
