William R. “Bill” Cameron, 77, of Bloomington, Indiana peacefully passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at the Golden Living Center. He was born on January 24, 1942, in Bedford, Indiana the son of Norman and Frances Capitola (McDonald) Cameron. His father died shortly after Bill was born leaving his mother with two sons during the Great Depression. Bill’s grandparents were instrumental in his care and raising. Bill was a 1960 graduate of Bedford High School. He was drawn by his cousins Fred and Chee Chee to California where he immediately enlisted into the US Navy. Using the GI bill to attend and graduate from Indiana State University with a bachelors degree in education. Bill was what is called a “Mustang” in the military. He started as an enlisted E1 and worked himself up in 25 years through the officer ranks to O5. A radioman during Vietnam, he ended his Naval career as a Commander in the US Navy. Bill used his degree to teach math at Bedford North Lawrence High School for a short time. His professional career was in insurance running the Cameron Agency and retiring from the Prudential Insurance Company. Bill was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Bloomington and the Bloomington Country Club where he loved to golf and play a mean game of gin rummy with the guys. Some of his happiest memories were made around the card table. Anyone that knew Bill knew that he loved Cardinal baseball and was an avid fan who never missed a broadcast. He took annual trips with his kids to Busch Stadium and instilled a love for the game in many. Bill is survived by his wife; Paula Gayle (Fiscus) Cameron of Bedford, Children Malissa D. (Jason) Waterford of Bloomington, Walter Eric (Izze) Cameron of Evansville, six grandchildren John Cameron, Jessica (Jesse) Singleton, James Cameron, Lauren Waterford, Adrianna Waterford, Ella Grace Waterford, one great-granddaughter Mya Singleton, a brother Richard “Dick” (Betty) Cameron of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his father and cherished mother, two daughters Trina Cameron and Cathy Cameron. Please join us for an informal Celebration of Life service that will be held at 12:30 pm Saturday, March 30, 2019, at the Allen Funeral Home 4155 S. Old St Rd 37 Bloomington. Casual attire is preferred. Lunch will be provided for family and friends following the service to allow time to visit and reminisce. Cremation Rites have been accorded. We are requesting that no flowers be sent. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Global Minded Project www.globalmindedproject.com. Bill supported GMP for years as they work to serve local youth and Native American youth providing avenues of confidence and opportunity for growth, mentorship, and education.
