Obituary Marilyn Rees, died on February 3, 2023, after a brief illness. She was a Richmond transplant that spent the last 33 years of her life in the Richmond area after having relocated from Fayetteville, N.Y. She was pre-deceased by her husband Gerald (Jerry) H. Rees. Marilyn and Jerry met in Potsdam, NY where she attended Potsdam State Teacher’s College and was a member of Alpha Delta sorority. After college she worked as a teacher in the Farmingdale, N.Y. school district. After their marriage they began their lives together in the Southern Tier of New York State before settling in Fayetteville, for the next 25 years. Marilyn put her teaching career on hold to raise her family. After the kids began their elementary school education, Marilyn would often substitute-teach in the school district. She was also active in the Boys and Girls Club of Syracuse, N.Y. Marilyn was born in Watertown, N.Y. to Emery Edwin Paul and Elizabeth Mary Paul and was the youngest of four children. Each one of them, seven years apart. Her siblings, Agnes, Mary, Emery (Jack) have all pre-deceased her. Marilyn is survived by her children, David Rees (Karyn), Nancy Volante (Daniel) and Jim Rees (Amy); as well as nine grandchildren; sister-in-law, Evelyn Paul and a host of nephews and nieces, that she was in touch with regularly. Marilyn cherished summers spent at their family cottage on Red Horse Island on the St. Lawrence River outside of Gananoque, Ontario. They would spend their summers there interrupted only by the need to run into town for groceries and beer. The refrigerator was well stocked with Molson Golden and Labatts Blue when they used to put them in the short bottles. Many of their friends from the Fayetteville area would come for weekend visits and Marilyn loved hosting and demonstrating her skills in the kitchen. They loved to travel to tropical island destinations to escape the notorious Syracuse winters. The cold gray winters of upstate New York finally chased them out and they relocated to the Richmond area to be closer to daughter Nancy and enjoy the warmer winters. Marilyn was ecstatic when her favorite grocery store, Wegman’s, from New York finally made its way to the Atlantic states and she encouraged all of friends to shop there. She also enjoyed attending regular meetings of the Red Wine Reduction Society. She enjoyed reading the Sunday New York Times over the span of the week and doing the crossword puzzle. Marilyn was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church parish and enjoyed the many friends she made serving as an usher and counting the offerings. They were a big part of her social circle and provided her with many fond memories. She enjoyed reading the Sunday New York Times over the span of the week and attempting the crossword puzzle. Calling hours will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, at Bliley’s-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Road. A memorial mass will take place 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 8, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, 2700 Dolfield Drive, North Chesterfield. The family is thankful for all of the care and support that her friends and church community provided during the final months of her life.
