Obituary Paul Douglas Monroe was born on May 14, 1942 to Blanche Sanders Monroe and Vernon Elmo Monroe in Henryetta, Oklahoma. He spent his tender years around Dustin, Oklahoma, going barefoot in farmyards and swimming in ponds with his cousin Jack (without his mother’s permission of course). Before he moved to Hobbs New Mexico, he and Jack managed to pilot a bicycle down the highest mountain around, and succeeded in not breaking his neck or getting a whipping by his Uncle Cub. Legend said it took two hours to push the bike up and only 5 minutes to ride it down. He graduated high school from Hobbs High in 1960, and immediately went to work in the Potash mines of New Mexico. He later joined the US Army and served stateside. After completing his commitment to the army, he worked in Ruidoso, New Mexico as a valet at Ruidoso Downs, where he met and married Linda Stroud. They had three children, Rory Paul, Melissa and Heather. Paul started working in the oil field after marrying Linda, working his way up from roughneck, to directional driller, to drilling consultant. His job took him to multiple US states, Germany, and South America. He liked to spend time breeding and training race horses. In later years, he returned to his roots, breeding and raising cattle. He enjoyed working cattle with his son-in-law and grandsons, and training his pretty Aussie Bonnie to chase cows and sleep on the couch. He loved talking horses with his youngest daughter and politics with the eldest. Paul’s father described him as a rebel, and in a way, he was. He was an oil man who liked the idea of electric cars. He was a cowboy who loved a good pedicure. He was never afraid to go after a big idea. He was always willing to give a person a chance, no matter what they looked like or where they came from. Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Stroud Monroe, one son, Rory Paul Monroe, his parents, and one brother, Duane Monroe. He is survived by: daughters and sons in law Heather and John Gallagher and Melissa and Shawn Brassfield, grandchildren Kohner and Kaden Gallagher and Jillian and Joelly Brassfield all of Ada, Oklahoma, ex-wife Rhonda Chambers of Oklahoma City and stepson Jess Horton of Sterling, Connecticut, cousins Larry Cooksey of New York and Jerry Cooksey of Colorado Springs. Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, January 3, 2022 at the Estes-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Ada. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery, Dustin, Oklahoma.
