Sarah’s Obituary Sioux Falls, SD ~ Sarah Martha Lechner, age 82, died on Thursday, April 23, 2020 at Ava’s House by Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, SD. A memorial graveside service will be held later this summer in Leola, SD followed by a memorial gathering in Aberdeen, SD. Sarah Martha Schaffer was born on February 22, 1938 in Leola, SD to Phillip and Mary (Schwartz) Schaffer. She was raised and received her education in Leola, SD. Following her education Sarah made her home in Aberdeen, SD before moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 1984. Sarah was united in marriage with Allen Fred Lechner on October 1, 1953 and from this union was blessed with five children. Sarah held various retail positions since moving to Sioux Falls, including working at St. Vincent DePaul Store and as a demonstrator at various Hy-Vee Stores. Sarah enjoyed collecting newspaper clippings, collecting greeting cards and enjoyed her breakfast gatherings with daughters; above all spending time with her family in the Black Hills riding horses and riding in her son’s Polaris Rzr. Grateful for having shared her life are her five children, Susan Lechner, Sioux Falls, SD, Dean Lechner, Sioux Falls, SD, Don (Pam) Lechner, Mesquite, NV, Sheila (Rodney Mohr) Lechner, Sioux Falls, SD and Tim (Shelly) Lechner, Spearfish, SD; ten grandchildren, Eric Lechner, Justin (Sherry) Lechner, Shannon Lechner, Paula Lechner, Tony Lechner, Joey Lechner, Nathan Lechner, Jacob Lechner, Nicole (Joe) Winnings, and Adam Lechner; five great-grandchildren, Cayden, Lucas, Taylor, Avery and Emma; three sisters, Mabel Jackson, Portland, OR, Betty (Leon) Nelson, Portland, OR, and LaVonne Schaffer, Aberdeen, SD; two brothers, Ron (Fae) Schaffer, Aberdeen, SD and Phillip (Beverly) Schaffer Jr., Morgan Town, WV; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Mary Schaffer; brothers, Raymond Schaffer (MIA in Korean War), Dennis Schaffer, Marvin Schaffer and Bud Schaffer; sister, Adeline Voight; and a step sister, Sally Grohnke.
