Paul Sommar, 97, of Melcher-Dallas passed away at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital on April 14, 2020. A private family service will be held on Saturday, April 18th. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Melcher-Dallas. A Mass will be held at a later date when all of Paul’s family and friends can gather to share in his memory. The Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Melcher-Dallas is helping Paul’s family with the arrangements. Paul was born July 25, 1922 to Edward and Elizabeth Ripperger Sommar at the family farm east of Bauer. He was united in marriage to Mary Bucklew on June 15, 1949. They were blessed with three children: Kathy, Carol, and Joey. Paul farmed, worked with his father-in-law, and managed the Phillips 66 Station before retiring. He loved growing things in his garden, talking with everyone he came in contact with, and especially his family and spending every minute he could with them. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of nearly 71 years, Mary; his daughters: Kathy Gass and Carol Shives; grandchildren: Paul (Jamie) Gass, Mark (Michelle) Gass, Jennifer (Darrell) Van Gorp, and Brian (Patricia) Shives; great grandchildren: Kayla, Morgan, Caiden, Treylee, Emma, Isabella, Kyra, Emily, Kyle, Lukas, Owen, Drew (Danielle), Tyler (Jackie), Dillon, and Dakota; and great great grandchildren: Breonna, Addison, and Reagan; along with many relatives and friends. Preceding Paul in death were his parents: Edward and Elizabeth; son, Joey; three brothers; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
