Obituary December 19, 1947 – April 13, 2020 Michael K. Phillips, 72, of Gurley, passed away Monday. He was preceded in death by father, Robert L. Phillips; son, Byron C. Phillips and great-granddaughter, Avery Marie Murphy. Surviving are wife, Diem Phillips; mother, Juanita Jackson Phillips; son, Apen Phillips (Sheila); daughter, Deborah Butler (Alan); grandchildren, Kelli Phillips-Jones (Charles Gibbs), Christopher Butler (Sydney Kate Watson), Aprena Phillips, Brian Butler, Ethan Butler (Jessie), Emily Murphy (Ethan), great grandchildren, Garaden Butler and Zayn Murphy; brother, Dennis Phillips (Vicky) of Elkville, Illinois; sister, Teresa Phillips; sister, Susan Grigsby (Kevin) of Anna Illinois and several nieces & nephews. Mike was born in Du Quoin Illinois, the first born to a Southern Illinois coal miner. He attended Elverado High School in Elkville, Illinois, shortly after graduation he enlisted in the USAF where he served for over 20 years and retired as a SMSGT. While he was stationed in Thailand he meet the love of his life and they shared over 50 years together. Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, motorsports and spending time with his grandchildren and great grand children. With his devotion to family and career he instilled in them the importance of a good work ethic as well as the importance of education. He encouraged them in every way possible to reach for their goals and dreams. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, friend and airman. He will be greatly missed.
