Mary’s Obituary Mary Paula Grimes, March 3, 1950 – April 26, 2020. Mary Paula Grimes, formerly of Davison, passed away peacefully at her residence on April 26, 2020. She had recently celebrated her 70th birthday. Mary, who was known as “Paula” by most of her family and friends, was born in Flint, Michigan, on March 3, 1950. She was the oldest of four children born to the late Robert Grimes Sr. and Genevieve Evelyn Grimes. She graduated from Lake Fenton High School in 1968. She loved to tell the story about being crowned homecoming queen, even after the difficulties she had in middle school when she had brain surgery on a softball-sized tumor and had to shave half of her head. She jokingly said she was the reason side-ponytails became popular. After high school, she attended Albion College and was a proud Briton until she passed, reliving her youth by sharing her Alpha Chi Omega sorority stories. Paula was a wonderful cook and loved making meals for her family (or a crowd). She loved to share her family heritage and history, and she was proud of her lineage. She never stopped missing the centennial farmhouse where she lived with her parents and children, which had been in the family for well over 100 years before it was sold in 2000. She also never stopped missing her parents and could not wait for the day where she would be reunited with them and the rest of her family who passed on before her. Paula’s friends and family will tell you that her smile would light up the room and her laughter was contagious. Her love of family was never-ending, and she would always declare how much pride and happiness her five grandchildren gave her. The only thing Mary Paula loved more than her family was her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Flint, where she spent most of her time volunteering and singing God’s praises by being a member of their choir for many years. Mary Paula is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Evelyn Grimes, and sisters, Lonna and Jane. She leaves behind her daughters, Jennifer Phillips (Matthew Brown) and Mary (Christopher) Durant of Grand Blanc; grandchildren, Jordan, Gage, Hannah, Kendyl, and Logan; brother, Robert Grimes, Jr., and many beloved aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. While no funeral service is currently scheduled, a celebration of life ceremony will be announced at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (www.stpaulschurchflint.com), or to her family to help cover medical bills and final expenses (www.paypal.me/mpgrimesmemorium).
