Mary’s Obituary Mary Lee Smith Hayes, 65 of Cedar Rapids passed away Thursday, April 9, 2020 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Per Mary’s wishes, there will be no services. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family. Mary is survived by her children, Richard “Zach” Hayes, Nicholas Hayes, and Jayme Smith all of Cedar Rapids; brother, Jim Hull of Kansas City, MO; sister, Georgia Hull of Texas; nieces; Kim and Mary; nephews, Alex, Ben, Tim, and David; and former husband and friend, Doug Smith. Mary was proceeded in death by her parents, James and Artell Hull; and sister, Jayne Hull. Mary was born on May 26, 1954 in Fort Madison, the daughter of James Hull and Artell Gelsthorpe. She graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1972, received a B.S. degree from Central Illinois College, Peoria, IL in 1985, and later received a Masters ABT from Western University. She married Donald Hayes and had two sons, Zach and Nich. She then married Doug Smith and had daughter, Jayme. Mary worked for KGAN TV, and was named employee of the month four times in the traffic and promotions area. She later worked at Gallery Lainzberg and Yellow Book in Cedar Rapids, and then became a stay at home mom. Mary worked tirelessly for several years at Lovely Lane UMC making and serving Wednesday evening meals and Tuesday lunches. Mary enjoyed spending time with her children, watching Harry Potter, caring for her dog Duff, her cat Lucky, and collecting frog and owl artwork and figurines.
