Matteson, 64, of Coventry RI, passed away peacefully at home on April 22, 2020. She was born the daughter of the late Raymond Malstrom and Margaret Kurachka on January 10, 1956. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Kenneth Matteson. Marge served honorably in the US Navy from 1974 to 1976 as a computer programmer, when programs were made of punch cards. A point she loved to make when retelling stories of how it was “back then”. She was fiercely proud of her military service and was an avid advocate for helping others navigate the challenges of Veteran’s Affairs. She had a love of collecting interesting things, collectibles, and items that told stories. In 1993, she and Ken moved from open air markets to a non-sports collectible storefront, Matteson’s Cards and Collectibles. Here she touched the lives of so many in the community, providing a place for kids to be safe and enjoy games like Magic: the Gathering, Pokemon, and Pogs. Creating a first for the state, they held annual conventions for collectibles of all types – a precursor to the Comic Con’s they would later become. The love of interesting stories led her to the next passion from which she would never tire – Genealogy. Over the next decades, Marge would become a dedicated investigator of local history. Often spending most of her time at gravesites around the state, she charted out hundreds of years’ worth of family history – connecting with the genealogy community with just as much impact as she had with her store. Always willing to help, she became known across the country as an expert in local history and families. Marge will be missed terribly. She touched the lives of so, so many, sharing her passions and guidance. She had a huge heart, a sharp tongue, and never gave up when faced with adversity. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two children, Jedediah Talbot and Melissa Griffith; her step-children, Daniel and Kimberly Matteson; and her grandchildren Avery, Ariel, Ian, Noah, and Tristan. Due to current health and safety regulations her funeral will be private. A memorial service will occur at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Print Obituary
