Obituary O’GRADY, JANET M. (ROGERS) 77, of East Providence RI passed away peacefully in Conway, SC on Friday April 10, 2020 surrounded by her family. She was the loving wife of the late James M. O’Grady Jr. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Antone and Eleanor (Rourke) Rogers and a life-long resident of East Providence. Janet lived a life marked by her service to others. For many years she was a waitress and cashier at the Asquino’s Restaurant, a role that gave her the flexibility to earn extra family income while raising her children. Year’s after her dad’s death, Janet cared for her mother who suffered from dementia. She took an entry level position at RI Hospital on the third shift so she could care for her mom during the day. This work schedule allowed her to do the same for her husband years later when he fell ill. She worked at RIH for 25 years and rose to the position Unit Secretary where she was admiringly known as “Ma” by her staff of nurses, residents, and attending physicians. A stanch supporter of her hospital coworkers she helped establish a collective bargaining unit as part of the Teamster’s Local 251 where she became a shop steward, and union board trustee. Shortly after her retirement in 2015, Janet volunteered as Foster Grandparent in the East Bay Head Start program where she continued her life of service by assisting children in need. Janet was a sensational cook who loved to experiment with new dishes and to teach others how to cook. She was also an active member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 2337 in East Providence. She is survived by her three sons, Michael J. O’Grady and his wife Maria of Conway SC, Kevin A. O’Grady and his wife Linda of Indian Trail NC, and Stephen T. O’Grady of East Providence. She is also survived by five grandchildren Sarah, Shannon, Luke, Caitlyn and Dylan. She was predeceased by her brother Edward Rogers. Due to the current extenuating circumstances, a private service will be held in Conway SC. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Catholic Church in Pawtucket RI at a later date.
