Gertrude “Gertie”‘s Obituary Gertrude E. “Gertie” Hinkle, 96 of Albion, NE passed away Saturday, April 18, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society – Albion. In consideration of the COVID-19 restrictions currently in place, there will be a private family service held with burial at St. John’s Cemetery near Petersburg, NE. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date. In compliance with COVID-19 restrictions set by the CDC, a restricted visitation will be Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at Levander Funeral Home in Albion, NE, from 3-6 p.m. with no more than 10 people allowed in the funeral home at one time. In an effort to keep our community safe, we strongly encourage those feeling ill or who are part of an at-risk population (e.g., the elderly or immune-compromised, etc.) to please stay home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. Levander Funeral Home of Albion is in charge of arrangements. You may call or email the funeral home for family contact information. Gertrude Elizabeth Hinkle, daughter of Pete and Louise (Ketteler) Wirges, was born October 29, 1923 at Petersburg, NE. She attended St. John’s Grade and High School, then worked at the Boone County Court House and Sullivan Motors in Albion. On June 3, 1947, she was married to Emery A. Hinkle of Akron, NE, at St. John’s Church in Petersburg, NE. They farmed for several years near Akron before moving to a farm east of Petersburg. Emery passed away on March 10, 1982. Gertie moved to Albion and joined St. Michael’s Parish. She was a member of Petersburg Legion Auxiliary and Albion VFW Auxiliary. She is survived by her daughter Janis Bergan of Council Bluffs, IA; son Steven (Stephanie) Hinkle of Rocklin, CA; a grandson Joshua Bergan of Council Bluffs, IA; a brother Leonard (Lorraine) Wirges of Rantoul, IL; a sister Eldora Schrad of Columbus, NE; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
