Gary L. Johnson of Republic Twp, Michigan April 21, 1945 – April 5, 2020 Republic Twp., MI- Gary Lee Johnson, age 74, Republic resident, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020 at UP Health System Marquette after a battle with COVID-19 (coronavirus). Gary was born in Marquette, Michigan on April 21, 1945, a son of the late Frances (Steinberger) and Garnet Johnson. He graduated from Bishop Baraga High School, class of 1963. Gary worked for the Marquette County Road Commission for many years retiring as a foreman in 2003. He served as Republic Township Supervisor for 19 years, Zoning Administrator and served on the Planning Commission. He also served on several Marquette County Boards over the years. Gary was a member of St Augustine Catholic Church in Republic and a former member of the Republic Lions Club. Gary enjoyed time spent outdoors, fishing, camping, and being out on his boat. He cherished time with family and his dog Keva. Gary was always willing to help others. “Until we meet again, we love you so very much”- Kathy Gary is survived by his with Kathy (Dawson) Johnson whom he married on Aug 17, 1968, a daughter, Melissa (Matt) Torning, of Hudson, WI. a son, Curt (Kelly) Johnson, of Roseville, MN; 2 grandsons; Anton and Abram Torning, a sister Janet (Larry) Johnson of Marquette, a brother Mike Johnson of Florida, brother in law and sister in law Curt (Connie) Carey, brothers in law: Mark Meeker, and Bill Perron, along with several nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters Ann Perron and Cheryl Meeker. A Celebration of Gary’s life will be held at a later time.
