Fred’s Obituary Fred Arthur Briegs, Jr., 83, of Woodbridge, passed away on April 20, 2020 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick. Born on September 18, 1936 in Perth Amboy, Fred was a lifelong resident of Woodbridge. He was a 1959 graduate of Oberlin College, studying organ and choral conducting at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He enlisted as a member of the Army Reserve, serving 10 months on active duty in 1961. He was employed at Continental Insurance Company for over 25 years, retiring in 1990. Fred was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Woodbridge for his entire life. Fred’s calling in life was to be a church organist and Choir Director. He became the Director of Music at the First Presbyterian Church of Woodbridge in 1960 where he served for 55 years, retiring in 2015. Fred continued as an organist for various churches, and for the last three years has been performing services for the Good Shepherd Parish in Hopelawn, NJ. He served several years as the Treasurer of the American Guild of Organists Middle chapter. Fred was an avid circus fan, having attended hundreds of circus performances. One of his passions was to collect various circus memorabilia. He loved telling stories and jokes, travelling on vacations with his wife, and spending time with his family. He was a diehard New York Mets fan. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia Briegs nee Rechnitzer; his parents, Fred A. Briegs, Sr., and Marjorie Briegs nee Cook; and his sisters Barbara Barford and Dorothy Rankin. He is survived by a daughter, Catherine Rohrbach and her husband Robert of Hillsborough; two sons, David Briegs and his wife Karen of Hillsborough, and Alan Briegs and his wife Christine of Hamilton; and six grandchildren, Lauryn Rohrbach, Alec Rohrbach, Brynne Briegs, Boone Briegs, Rebecca Briegs, and Nicole Briegs. Due to current restrictions, a private funeral service will be held for immediate family under the direction of Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street, Woodbridge. A memorial service to celebrate Fred’s life with family and friends will be announced at a later time.
