Edith’s Obituary Ishpeming, MI- Edith Lorraine Black, age 90, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 7 while in the loving care of Norlite Nursing Center. She was born on November 4, 1929 in Port Arthur, Ontario, now the northern part of Thunder Bay, the daughter of Charles and Hazel Adderley. She graduated in 1948 from Port Arthur Collegiate Institute from grade 13. She then took first year university at the Lakehead Technical Institute of Port Arthur, now the Lakehead University, where she met her future husband, Neil. She graduated from Hamilton General Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario in 1951 as a Laboratory Technician. She then worked at Kitchener General Hospital, Kitchener, Ontario until 1952 when she returned to Port Arthur to work at Port Arthur General Hospital. She and Neil were married on December 29, 1953 and had four daughters. They moved to Ishpeming in 1971. In the early years of marriage, Lorraine learned to drive when her girls were very young while Neil was away on extended work trips. She could often be seen in the old station wagon, crammed to the roof with her girls and their friends, on their way to the lake to swim, to the river to skate, or to Mount Baldy to ski. raine loved the outdoors and taught her daughters to appreciate the beauty of it no matter what the season. She was a graceful skater, downhill and cross-country skier, and in the summer, she loved to go swimming in Lake Superior or Cedar Lake, no matter how cold the water was! She also enjoyed spending time tending to her flowers and garden. When she wasn’t enjoying time with her children or grandchildren, she was volunteering as an aide in the special needs class at Ishpeming High School, and she was an active long-time member of Wesley United Methodist Church’s Women’s group making pasties, visiting the church members in nursing homes, and delivering Meals on Wheels. She also kept fit by walking every day and was a member of the Curves family, which she really enjoyed. When at home she spent many hours reading, sewing, quilting, creating Calligraphy, and baking – she was a phenomenal baker, and her pies were legendary in her family! Due to Parkinson’s disease, Lorraine spent her last years at Norlite, where she enjoyed the many activities they had to offer, especially the ones that included cake and ice-cream (and anything chocolate!) She also loved music and spent many hours listening to her favorite CD’s, which certain staff members knew and kept her readily supplied! She dearly loved all the staff and considered them family. Lorraine will be remembered for her infinite love, her gentle, sweet, caring nature and smile, and her sassiness (which she developed later in life!) She always had a smile and kind words for whoever she met. She was loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Hazel Adderley, brother Jack and sister-in-law Sally Adderley, and brother Charlie Adderley. Survivors include daughters Heather (Phil) Frustaglio, Janice (John) Hartviksen, Jocelyn (Peter) Belpedio, Denise (Don) Bluekamp, grandchildren Neil (Pam) Frustaglio, Deanna (Rob) Carlson, Craig Belpedio, Lauren Belpedio, Jenna Hartviksen, great-grandchildren Dillinger, Duncan and Rose Frustaglio, sister-in-law Fran Adderley, and nieces and nephews in Canada. A celebration of Lorraine’s life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Lorraine’s memory to Norlite Nursing Center’s Activities Fund, 701 Homestead Street, Marquette, MI 49855, (906)228-9252. Lorraine’s family cannot thank all of Norlite’s staff enough for their love, compassion, caring, and laughter that they gave to Lorraine and Neil during their years there, and the support they gave to their daughters.
