Donald’s Obituary I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7. DONALD HARRISON HEGE, SR., age 89, a lifelong resident of Lexington, N.C., went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 28, 2020. He was born to Joe Harvey Hege, Sr. and Josephine Hilliard Hege on July 9, 1930. Don is survived by his wife of 65 years, Phyllis Everhart Hege; his son, Donald, Jr.; and his daughter Kaye (Robert) Spaugh. He is also survived by his three beloved grandchildren: Caroline, Andrew and Michael Spaugh. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his four brothers: Joe Jr., Jack, Guy and his twin Ron; and by his sister, Faye. Don was a veteran of the U.S. Army, stationed in Austria. He was employed by Wysong and Miles in Greensboro, N.C. for 35 years, retiring as Vice President of Manufacturing in 1987. Don was also the owner and President of Central Machinery Company, Inc., which grew from an evening hobby to a busy woodworking machinery and parts business. Countless friendships were created or strengthened in the shop at Central Machinery. Don could design, build or fix anything. Many people called Don the “Hardest working man they ever knew.” Don was an active member of Pilgrim Reformed Church for many years, serving in numerous leadership capacities, including chairing the committee to build a new sanctuary and later spearheading their departure from the U.C.C. denomination. For the final ten years of his life he worshiped with his daughter’s family as a member of Meadowview Reformed Presbyterian Church. Don was blessed to be a member of the Gideons International (Davidson North Camp) and he cherished taking his grandson to their weekly Saturday morning prayer meetings. Don loved traveling “out west” with his brothers and his good friend Bo Carlton; and he was grateful for yearly motorhome trips with his grandchildren to Maine and Canada. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Don’s physician, Terry V. Arnold, M.D., who took such loving care of him; and also to his selfless caregivers Jean Bush, Annie Gwynn and Victoria Brown for the compassion they showed to him. A graveside service will be held at Forest Hill Memorial Park on Saturday,May 2, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be directed to Meadowview Reformed Presbyterian Church,1 Graceway Drive, Lexington, N.C. 27295. “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57.
