Dean’s Obituary Celebration of Life Services for Dean Humphries will be held at a later date at the First Baptist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska, due to current health restrictions in place with the COVID-19 pandemic. Inurnment will be held in the Immanuel Cemetery in rural Harlan County, Nebraska. Edwin “Dean” Humphries, 81 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2020, at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. Dean was born on June 15, 1938, in Holdrege, the only child to Edwin C. and Bernetta “Nettie” (Fiscus) Humphries. He received his primary education from Roosevelt Elementary School, and then attended Holdrege High School, graduating with the class of 1956. Following his education, Dean enlisted in the United States Army on November 13, 1956. He was stationed in Taiwan as a fire control mechanic. Dean received decorations as a rifle marksman, carbine sharpshooter, and the good conduct medal. He was honorably discharged on September 1, 1959, and then continued to serve in the Army Reserves until November 12, 1962. On February 4, 1962, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Fae “Gerry” Lamb at the Mascot Bethel Church south of Holdrege. The couple were blessed with three children: Julie Lynn, Lori Lee, and Randall Dean. The family made their home in Holdrege, where Dean worked as a Heating and Air Conditioning service technician, installer, and tin bender for the following companies: WF Anderson; KK Appliance; Belknap Company; A&S Heating and Air Conditioning; and Holdrege Heating and Air. In retirement, Dean was employed at Orscheln Farm and Home in Holdrege. Dean was an avid reader, and loved history novels; especially anything regarding the railroad. He enjoyed collecting numerous model cars, planes, and tanks. Dean and Gerry always enjoyed tending to a large garden in the summer as well. Dean was also an avid sports fan, especially Husker football and volleyball, and the Chicago Cubs. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Holdrege. Dean was also an active member of the Jaycees on both the local and state level. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters-in-law: Laura “Pearl” Carlson and her husband, Ernest; and Nyla Nelson and her husband, Darrel; and brothers-in-law: Harold Shield; and Les Dallman. Dean leaves to celebrate his life: his loving wife of 58 years, Gerry Humphries of Holdrege; two daughters: Julie Stuart and her husband, Richard of Beatrice, Nebraska; and Lori Watson and her husband, Rich of Holdrege; one son, Randall Humphries of Bellevue, Nebraska; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Marni (Stuart) Baker and her husband, Beau, and daughter, Aubree of Lexington, Nebraska; Devin Stuart of Lincoln, Nebraska; Jonah Watson of Kearney, Nebraska; Elijah Watson of Los Angeles, California; Hannah Watson of Lincoln; and Sarai Humphries of Opelousas, Louisiana; sisters-in-law: Karene Dallman of Lincoln; Kathryn James and her husband, Dale of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Evelyn Lamb of Fayetteville, Arkansas; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. There will be no visitation, the family is honoring Dean’s wish for cremation. A memorial has been established in Dean’s honor, and kindly suggested to the First Baptist Church in Holdrege.
