Aurea Esther Solla Tuesday March 31st 2020

Tuesday March 31st 2020
Let us celebrate Aurea Esther Solla. She was the sweetest women, fully of joy, fierce love and lots of laughter. Aurea means the light you see before the sun comes up, which is fit her, she would fill a space with love before you even saw her. We called her Mom Esther, because when we grandchildren came along, she didn’t want an old lady name like grandma. Mom Esther loved her family like no other. Even when we were apart, we never failed to receive her little notes with a couple dollars encouraging us to go get a slice of pizza and thank God for our many blessings. Mom Esther born on October 10, 1930 in Torro Negro, Puerto Rico. She shared many stories of what it was like to grow up in that mountain valley, also known as El Ojo. She spent her childhood with having adventures with her many brothers and sisters on their homestead. She valued education, even living with the principal’s family so she could attend school more easily given the distance from home to town. She married Robert Solla in 1950 and they enjoyed 70 years together, having just celebrated their anniversary. Together they enjoyed going on cruises, going camping and arguing seemingly just for fun. They are best known for their cross country drives, making it across the country in record time, even when they were into their 80’s. Mom Esther and Papa had 3 children. Hedy Sackett, Robert (predeceased) and an infant that passed away shortly after birth. When her baby passed away, she donated the body for research, and was comforted knowing that other babies born with the same condition had better treatments because of her child. Hedy & Robert were the apple of her eye. She loved spending time with them, and always loved to chat even for a few minutes about the little things in life. She would gladly ride a Greyhound bus to San Francisco, walking with Robert looking in all the shops and parks. She would come to Vermont and spend several weeks enjoying the Green Mountains with Hedy, reminded of her home in Puerto Rico. She had 2 grandchildren, Marie & Nick, and one great-grandson, Victor. She loved us all completely. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for us. She encouraged us to always say a little prayer, take a little walk and maybe have a little ice cream. Nick enjoyed climbing up Mom Esther playing tree until he got too tall, and we were able to repeat the tree game with Victor. Marie enjoyed making cookies and watching The Golden Girls snuggled on the sofa.To receive a Mom Esther hug was to be surrounded by love, and the gentleness of her touch was pure comfort. Nick has been an angel to Mom Esther these last years. He took special care of her, being patient when it wasn’t easy and making sure she had a little adventure every day. They had dance parties, went on road trips and had fancy brunch now and again. We are forever grateful for the way they loved each other. More recently Alzheimer’s stripped away much of her short term memory, and what was left was her core – a joyful, busy little tornado, full of love and wanting to organize everything. She wasn’t always sure how we were related, but in her words – she just knew we belonged to each other. Truer words were never spoken. Mom Esther was a woman a great faith. She was always sure to say her nightly prayers, and it is a comfort to know she is enjoying being reunited with her family in Heaven. She passed away, going gently in her sleep. It was as good a passing as anyone could ask for, and fitting with her personality, not wanting to make a fuss. We celebrate you Mom Esther. We encourage family and friends to go take a little walk, say a little prayer and have a little ice cream. The family will meet virtually on Monday, April 6, at 3pm for a celebration of life.
