Paul Jarvis “Shorty” Preston Jr., 83, of Martinsville, passed from this earthly life on Friday, March 6, 2020 in the comfort of his own home. He was born on April 1, 1936 in Indianapolis to the late Paul Jarvis and Sarah Elizabeth (Hacker) Preston. Shorty worked as a self-employed brick and stone mason for many years. He also was the head security guard at Harman-Becker Automotive Systems in Martinsville. He married the love of his life, Bonnie Mae Wall, on May 11, 1973; she preceded him in death on December 22, 2004. He was a member of the Martinsville Life Church of God. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing and was a member of Eagle Pines Golf Club in Mooresville. Additionally, he enjoyed playing pool, playing card games like euchre and solitaire, and vegetable gardening. Shorty possessed a witty sense of humor, was kindhearted, and was a good honest man. Many would say he never met a stranger. He leaves behind his family and friends including his sons, Harry (wife, Theresa) Arnett of Martinsville and Mark (girlfriend, Cammy Thomas) Preston of Martinsville; daughters, Martha (husband, Darryl) Sterns of Plainfield, Dorothy (husband, Robert) Grindstaff of Martinsville; Amanda Preston of Martinsville; and Lydia Preston of Martinsville; 23 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Sarah; wife, Bonnie Mae Preston; son, Fred Arnett; brother, Bobby Preston; grandchildren, Brentley Preston, Michael Gibson, and Donna Mae Preston; and great grandchild, Brianna Glidden. The family will host a gathering at Martinsville Life Church of God, 1410 South Harriett Street, Martinsville, from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm on Sunday, March 15, 2020. At 6:00 pm, a service celebrating Shorty’s life will begin at the church. Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville has been entrusted with the cremation arrangements.
