Mayola Stallings Montgomery, 97, of Evansville, Indiana passed away March 27, 2020 at Nazareth Home in Louisville, KY. Born on September 15, 1922, Mayola was one of eight children born in Waterflow, New Mexico to Damien and Bertha Stallings. Mayola’s family moved to Rockport, Indiana when Mayola was sixteen and she then graduated from Rockport High School, Class of 1940. Mayola was married to Nelson W. “Monty” Montgomery for 50 very happy years, before his passing in 1995. She often spoke gratefully about the good life with which she had been blessed. Mayola was devoted to her church, her family and her friends. She was incredibly fun and a joy to be with. Mayola lived kindly and loved steadfastly. If there were one word to describe her, it would be “classy”. Mayola was an accomplished competitive bridge player for over seventy years. Her warm personality and unique sense of humor endeared her to all who played with or against her. “All the bridge players are my very dear friends”, she would often say. In 1993, Mayola became a Gold Life Master in Duplicate Bridge. Mayola is survived by her four children, Diana Lappas (Robert) of Chapel Hill, NC; Mark Montgomery (Cathy) of Kennesaw, GA; Mitch Montgomery (Jennifer) of Newburgh, IN; Shelley Santry (Shannon) of Louisville, KY. Eleven grandchildren, Brian Lappas (Natalie), Jeremy Lappas, Melissa Montgomery, Nicholas Montgomery, Damien Montgomery, Bradley Montgomery, Sarah Santry, Katie Santry, William White, Patrick White and Colin White. Four great grandchildren, Ryan Montgomery, Myles Montgomery, Dylan Montgomery and Mila Lappas. As well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mayola was preceded in death by her loving husband and her seven siblings. Due to the pandemic, there will be a private family funeral service at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel. The service will be recorded and available for viewing at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March, 30, 2020 on the Ziemer Funeral Home website. Burial will be at Shiloh Cemetery in Rockport, IN.
