James Sheldon Omdal October 23, 1937 – March 26, 2020 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook James (Jim) Omdal, loving husband and father, passed away on Thursday, March 26th at the age of 82. We will remember Jim’s wonderful sense of humor, passion for the games of golf, and cribbage, and even though he was Norwegian, his love for wife Janet’s great Italian food. Jim’s lifetime of work focused on the improvement of education for children with special needs. Below is a brief message from Jim. I was born 82 years ago into a stable loving traditional family. We lived in a blue-collar NE Minneapolis neighborhood. I was educated in the Minneapolis schools, graduated from Edison High H.S. in 1955. After serving two years in the US Navy I obtained three degrees at the University of Minnesota. In 1962 I married a wonderful woman, Janet Yates, daughter of Italian immigrant parents. Our life was enriched with the birth of four children. My professional life began as a teacher at Chelsea Heights. With my advanced degrees I worked as school psychologist in St. Paul and District 196 and for 25 years I served as Director of Special education for District 196. I had many professional affiliations including Treasurer of Minnesota School Psychologists and President of the Minnesota Administrators of Special Education. I also served as PTA president of Sunnyside School, President of the Lakeville Hockey Boosters, and founding member and officer of The Little Men of North East, a group of high school friends that preserved our friendships for 60 + years. I was preceded in death by parents Irvin and Louella, sister Jeanette, and brother Wallace. I am survived by loving wife Janet of 58 years. Dear children Robin (Tim) Quast, Craig (Linda), Chris (Tammy) and Danielle (Derek) Winebarger. Grandchildren Libby, Emily, Noah, Maxwell, Anna and Stella.
