Obituary James K. Sweet, age 73, lifetime Lapeer resident, died Wednesday, March 18, 2020. He was born July 17, 1946 in Lapeer, to Kenneth and Rhea (Seeger) Sweet. James graduated in 1965 from Lapeer High School and went to work for General Motors. He was drafted during the Vietnam War and proudly served his country in the U. S. Army. Upon returning from the Army, Jim worked for Grand Trunk Railroad and Canadian National Railroad from 1969 to 2006. Mr. Sweet’s passion was flying his airplane. He also enjoyed collecting cars, bowling, helping others, he had a great sense of humor and Jim was a man of integrity. Jimmy owned a 1946 Ercoupe airplane he kept at Dupont Lapeer Airport, where he was an active member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 1303. The EAA educates adults and young people on the wonders of aviation and shares their passion of flying (especially with young people). The EAA has Group Fly Outs for breakfast on the weekends and Jimmy often did that. Mr. Sweet played in many bowling leagues at Gerlach Bowling Center and Richfield Bowling Center, often playing in bowling tournaments around the state. Jim is survived by his cousin: Sharon (C. Edward) Fox of Cass City; and his Dupont Lapeer Airport Family and his bowling family. He was preceded in death by his parents: Kenneth and Rhea Sweet. Cremation has been entrusted to Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer. A memorial service in honor of Mr. Sweet’s life will be held at a later date.
