He departed this earthly life on Saturday, February 29, 2020. Herman was born and reared in Orange, Texas. Pastor Jefferson was truly a young man of valor and virtue. He was committed to do the will of Christ in the spirit of excellence. His efforts were exemplified in his love and willingness to serve God with his whole heart. At the tender age of nine, Herman accepted the Lord as his personal Savior. Not long after, he was determined to be filled with the Holy Ghost, and on a Thursday night in 1993, at Starlight Church of God in Christ,God filled him with the Holy Ghost. At the age of 16, Herman accepted his calling to ministry to proclaim the Word of God. Herman, or HAL, as he was affectionately known, was a graduate of the West Orange-Stark High School class of 2003. He was very active in several student organizations and activities during high school. His talent and love for music earned him several awards in choir, which helped him earn a partial choral scholarship to Lamar University, where he originally double majored in music and biology/pre-med, but later changed his major to Business Administration. While at Lamar, he was active in the LU Choir, the Psalm 150 Gospel Choir and Bible Study, and the Student Government Association. Prior to his high school graduation in 2003, he also became one of the youngest graduates of the Charles Harrison Mason Systems of Bible College, by earning an Associate Degree in Bible and Theology. In 2004, at the age of 19, he was ordained an Elder in the Church of God in Christ. Herman served under the leadership of Pastor E.B. Lindsey, at Starlight Church of God in Christ in Orange, TX, for many years. He went on to serve as the Administrative Pastor of Greater Old Field Church of God in Christ in Bon Wier, TX, and later as the Administrative Pastor of Redeemed Church of God in Christ in Kountze, TX, before following the urging of the Lord to found a ministry, LIFE Church of God in Christ, that he launched in September 2018. LIFE COGIC had recently been fellowshipping in partnership with Greater Grace Church of God in Christ in Beaumont, TX, under the leadership of his spiritual father, Superintendent Robert Robinson, with the ministries planning to merge soon to become GRACE LIFE Church of God in Christ. Pastor Jefferson was also faithful and active on the local, district, state, and national levels of the Church of God in Christ. He served as the Texas Gulf Coast President of Evangelism, a member of the National Praise Team, a member of Send Judah First, an Executive Staff Member of the International Music Department, and a National Adjutant Brother. In June 2008, Herman met the love of his life, Lady Kanita, and they were married on June 1, 2013. Hal and Kanita were the perfect pair—they loved traveling, shopping, dining at their favorite restaurants, and most importantly, serving God together. They would often spend their days going from one church service to another and another. Pastor Hal considered Lady Kanita his partner in ministry, and he often referred to her as his “Favor from God.” She was his best friend and confidant, and he often said that she was “an answered prayer.” Herman or Mr. J, as his students affectionately called him, was employed by the West Orange-Cove CISD for several years. He taught Business Information Management classes and served as the Fine Arts Department Chair at West Orange-Stark Middle School. Mr. J was known as a stern, but caring teacher. He served as the advisor for several student organizations and committees, including Student Council and the Performance Arts Club, whichhe founded. Mr. J would spend countless hours helping students with assignments, working concession stands, and preparing for student programs. Recently, Herman had been exploring several promising business ventures and he was very excited about their potential success. Pastor Herman Jefferson was loved by many and he made it his mission to tell others about the love of Christ. He felt that he was commissioned by God to tell a dying world that holiness is still right and to set their affections on the things of the KINGDOM. At the conception of Pastor Jefferson’s ministry, God revealed Isaiah 43:18-19b to him, “Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of the old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth.” He was compelled by God to tell all who he came in contact with that their set back is a set up for their miracle! Pastor Jefferson was committed to a lifestyle of fasting and praying. He walked in the prophetic anointing in which God used him as a vessel to command the bound to be healed, delivered, and set free! When he was not preaching the Gospel, Herman was known to keep family and friends laughing with his funny jokes and silly antics. Whether it was coming up with funny nicknames for his loved ones or playing practical jokes on them, he was always finding a way to make others laugh and feel loved. He was also known by many for his prolific style and unique fashion. He was a snazzy dresser, as well as a very debonair and astute man. Although he was only 35 years young at the time of his death, the wisdom he had was beyond his years, and the impact he had on the lives of others and the Kingdom of Godwill live on for generations. Herman was proceeded in death by his parents, Sarah Jefferson Simon and Herman Lewis, Jr., his grandmother, Mary Jefferson, and his grandfathers, Herman Lewis, Sr. and Pastor Wilson Balka, and his Godbrother, Charles Jefferson, Jr. Forever cherishing his memory and continuing his legacy are his loving wife, Kanita, his sister and brother in love, Diztorsha and Ray Lavan; his sister and brother in love Kelli and Kendrek Herron; his sister HermicaMcDonald; and his sister and brother in law, Samaya Lewis-Napier and Darrell; four nieces McKenzie and Nia Lewis, Ashley McDonald and Savannah Napier, and one nephew, Dameris Napier; two Godsisters, Destiny Jefferson and Delisia Hunter. He is also survived by his grandmother, Pinkie Lewis Balka and his grandfather, John Jefferson, Sr. Also cherishing his memory are his Godmothers, Natalie Wade Carlis and Alice Faye Henson, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, colleagues, neighbors, and of course, his loving GRACE LIFE COGIC church family. Not to be left out and also forever cherishing his memory are his precious beloved dog, Angel and his nephew-dog, Satchmo. Herman will forever be missed and never be forgotten.
