Henry Edgar Routon May 04, 1948 – March 26, 2020 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Henry Edgar Routon “Pappy”, 71, peacefully went to be with the Lord surrounded by family on March 26th, 2020. He was a Hero in so many ways. He was a graduate of William Fleming High School in 1966, and a proud U.S. Army Sergeant Veteran who served in Vietnam from 1967-1968. He earned his Associates Degree in Applied Science and his Doctorate in Religious Studies. Henry was a Sergeant for the Roanoke City Police Department, a Deputy for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, First D.A.R.E. Officer in Franklin County, VA. He retired as the Chief of Police for Veterans Affairs in Salem, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Earl Routon and Freda Ayers Routon; sister; Shelby Jean Routon Massey and brother-in-law, William “Cooie” Edwards. He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Hope Routon; daughters, Tracy L. Beckner, Ginger L. Smith; Son, Henry Eric Routon; sons-in-law, David A. Beckner and Gerald “Bodie” Smith; sister, Terry Edwards, and Brothers, Danny Ray Routon (Jimalea Routon), Sonny Routon (Shelly Routon); grandchildren, Brittney L. Smith (Eric Dunn), Lindsey L. Offenbacker (Matt Offenbacker), Hope “Shea” Smith, Zane Edrick Routon, Samuel “Sammy” Chase Routon and Landon Cole Routon; great grandchildren, Emersynn Lynette Dunn and Maverick Sterling Offenbacker; cousin, Sandy Funk and aunt, Judy Wood along with many nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held at his home on “Dog Mountain” for family and close friends.
