He was born May 9, 1978 in Kenitra, Morocco to Larry Ralph Shults and Michele T. “Carpinello” Hibbs. He was a 1997 graduate of Maple Hill High School in Castleton, NY. He married Sherry Talbert on December 30, 2018 in Suffolk, VA at Sentara Obici Hospital after he was diagnosed; this was all due to the amazing nursing staff of the oncology wing at the hospital for putting a wedding together in such a short period of time, just to make something beautiful out of his diagnosis. Jasen joined the US Navy out of high school and earned several awards, which are not limited to these listed: Enlisted aviation warfare specialist, navy recruiting badge of excellence, navy achievement medal x2, navy battle E award, good conduct medal x5 awards, armed forces expeditionary medal, NATO Kosovo medal, Kosovo campaign medal, global war on terror expeditionary medal, national defense service medal, navy recruiting medal. Jasen retired from the US Navy as an Aviation Mechanic in 2012 and moved around several times, finding himself back in Hampton Roads. He began working for the City of Suffolk Public Utilities Water Department in 2017. He loved his job, his co-workers, and always made a positive impression with anyone he came in contact with. Jasen is survived by his wife Sherry (Suffolk, VA), a son Ethan (Suffolk, VA), two daughters Ayla (Franklin, VA) and Tiffany (Pocatello, ID), a mother Michele Hibbs (Peter) of East Greenbush, NY, a Sister Danielle Shults (Omar Carillo) Wynantskill, NY; niece Cylie (Wynantskill, NY), nephew Cody (Wynantskill, NY), a sister Brandi Shults(SC), Grandparents Daniel & Marjorie Carpinello (East Schodack, NY), several Aunts and Uncles, Best Friend Jennifer Nusbaum (Castleton, NY); grandchildren, many cousins; and an unlimited amount of military brothers and sisters. Jasen was predeceased by paternal grandparents Gerald and Vicki VanWormer of Newport TN and his father Larry Ralph Shults of Newport TN. Also predeceased by his loving dog companion Sasha. Adele, his new dog, will live on for him, and Ferris Bueller; for a little dog, Jay fell for him too. Jasen enjoyed many hobbies such as working on vehicles, teaching his son the different tools used and how to use them; including making him familiar with vehicle mechanics. He also enjoyed any and all time he got to spend with his little girl. He may not have had the same connection with her like his son, but having her near brought him joy. Jasen was raised as but was not a practicing Catholic, he was a member of the NRA, American Legion, and the VFW. Jasen was known for his sense of humor, huge heart, and anger when it came to protecting his loved ones. Special thanks goes to all of his friends, especially Mr. Pat Cox, Mr. Jason Engelke, Mr. Jwayne Neace. I called upon you 3 and you were on top of handling Jasen’s words for his eulogy and preparation of his military Uniform. I would also like to thank Ms. Wendy Pritchard and Mrs. Gretchen Heins-Gonzales, these two ladies have been my rock and have been there since the beginning, helping me through everything from start to end. Jasen may be gone but I can speak for him in saying “We love you all.” In the end, both my family and Jasen’s family came together to ensure all of us made it through this tragedy together.
