Gwendolyn Rose Kafer June 21, 1934 – June 13, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card FLORENCE – Gwendolyn Rose Kafer, 84, passed away peacefully at home with her husband and daughter on Thursday, June 13, 2019, after an extended illness. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, Jun 18, 2019, in the Mount Hope Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the mausoleum. She was born in Florence, a daughter of the late Troy Cleveland and Nora Lee Hatchell Rose. He graduated from McClenaghan High School and went to work for Southern Bell as a telephone operator. She retired from Southern Bell after 31 years of service. Mrs. Kafer was a life member and past President of the Telephone Pioneers. She was also a member of the Hug-A-Bears, the Florence Gideons – Florence East Camp, the Tea & Topic Literary Club, and the Book & Bridge Club (past President). Mrs. Kafer was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, and was a former member of the church choir. She was a member of the 50-Year Club at the church. She is survived by her husband of 62 ½ years, Jacob O. “Pete” Kafer, Jr.; her daughter, Lorelei “Lori” Virginia Kafer Salter of Lexington, SC; her son, Jacob O. Kafer, III, of California; her grandchildren, Jake Salter, Gwyneth Salter, and Selwyn Salter, who affectionately knew her as “Mimi”; and a sister, June Rose Warr, of Santee, SC. She was predeceased by a sister, Iris Rose Gibson. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 300 S. Irby St., Florence, SC 29501; or to Florence Gideons – East Camp, P. O.
