Elizabeth “Betty”‘s Obituary Elizabeth “Betty” Louise Lutey-Overhiser, 92, died Saturday, June 15, 2019 at The Cedars Retirement Community surrounded by the amazing folks that cared, and loved her for 7 years, 4 months and 22 days. Mom was born on January 21, 1927 in Ironwood, MI to the late Richard Harold and Hulda Otilia (Rhenlund) Lutey. Mom’s dad was born in Penzance, Cornwall, England in 1898 and migrated to America with his parents in 1903. Mom was the first born in American in his line. In 2005 we went to England and traveled to Penzance so she could see the place where her dad was born. Mom was a former member of First Baptist Church Elkhart, Grace Bible Church Elkhart then attended both North Park Community Church and finally Grace Brethren Church in Ft. Wayne. Mom retired from the Weyerhaeuser Co. in Middlebury as Quality Control Inspector. On weekends mom worked at Elkhart General Hospital as she called it, “a bed pan emptier”. She loved that work. Even at the Cedars she would go into rooms of the residence that were dying just to touch them and encourage the families. When mom moved to Ft. Wayne in 2006, mom would hang around the funeral home during visitation to greet people and take pictures of their flowers. Mom had an instant love for the clergy that ministered to the families. The pastor’s in Ft. Wayne were so gracious to always ask about mom in these last 7 years. I especially want to thank pastors Bob Arenobine and Dr. Dan Gelatt for the calls, visits and emails checking in on this saint. Surviving is her son, Richard Karl Overhiser, granddaughter Kim-Roe Kester, 4 grandsons, nieces, Dr. Barbara Lutey and Nancy Elaine (Tom) Bagwell. On February 1, 1948 she married John Lawrence Overhiser who died February 8, 2004, and also preceded in death is her brother, Richard Lutey March 17, 2006, 2 step-daughters Majorie Marr, and Janet Overhiser- Roe-Kasarda who mom took care of until her death at their home October 28, 2000, and a grandson Stephen Roe. Funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Grace Brethren Church 4619 Stellhorn Rd, Fort Wayne, IN 46815 with viewing from 1:00 ~ 3:00 p.m. Pastor Bob Arenobine and Dr. Dan Gelatt will officiate. The family will gather to bury mom Monday at the Grace Lawn Cemetery in Middlebury, IN on Monday June 24, 2019. Preferred memorials are to the Gideons or Hope for Animals. Since the mid 70’s Mr. Terry Clouse has been a personal and wonderful funeral director and friend in Christ and in funeral service. Waterman-Westbrook-Clouse Funeral Home Elkhart is assisting with logistics and meeting the families needs. Read More

Sympathies message

  1. I think Elizabeth Betty had two great uncles in WW1 (enlisted in Canada). John Harold Spargo was KIA. Richard Henry returned and is buried at Rocanville, Sask. As a member of the Legion, we don’t know why R.H. Spargo wound up here to be buried in 1924.
