Shirley W Ramsden Webb Friday April 5th 2019

After many years of tirelessly giving to others, Shirley Ramsden, aka “Ma R” passed away peacefully at daybreak on April 5, 2019. Shirley was the daughter of the late Carl and Roxie Dalyrmple Webb born into the Great Depression of 1935. She was a Syracuse native residing in the hamlet of Howlett Hill. With her husband Robert J Ramsden they raised 4 children while remaining active with scouting, fire dept/auxiliary, and church. Shirley was employed with Marcellus Central Schools as a teaching assistant for 29 years before becoming a job coach for OCM BOCES. Shirley and Bob loved to travel and were active together with Folksmarch, who they traveled with. Shirley served the congregation at Howlett Hill Presbyterian Church in choir and various leadership positions. Shirley was also active with an organ society and traveled throughout the northeast with friends to enjoy music. As her children left the nest, Shirley pursued a passion supporting the volunteer fire service. Not content with 50+ years of active involvement with the Howlett Hill Fire Department auxiliary, Shirley remained an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Onondaga County Volunteer Firemen’s Association and of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York until the time of her death. During her tenure, Shirley received numerous accolades and awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award that she highly valued.. No doubt, raffle ticket sales will be impacted for all of these organizations! Shirley believed strongly that education was a key element in fire prevention, and was involved in the Fire Prevention Education committee since its inception. One of the tasks she undertook was fund raising for the committee. Each year she would be found managing the store at the Fire Prevention booth for the NYS Fair. It was this committee that awarded her the Boynton Award in 2001. She is survived by her brother, Robert (Kathy) Webb of Sandy Creek, her son, Mark (Sally) Ramsden of Jordan, three daughters Cynthia (Joe) Cassano of Lakeport, Kathleen (Dan) Irby of Syracuse and Laurie Whittico (Russ Fletcher) of Memphis. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Shirley was pre-deceased in 1996 by both her husband Robert J. Ramsden and parents Carl and Roxie Webb, all of Syracuse. A memorial service is planned at the Onondaga Hill Presbyterian Church for April 29 at 4 PM. This will be followed by a celebration of her life at the Howlett Hill Volunteer Fire Department, 3384 Howlett Hill Rd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you support the volunteer fire service by donating in her memory to the Fire Prevention Education Center or to the Howlett Hill Fire Department. Alternatively, a donation in Shirley’s memory to your local volunteer fire company would undoubtedly be appreciated. Read Less To send flowers in memory of Shirley W.
