Rose’s Obituary Rose Marie (Johannes) Zins, age 102, of New Ulm, formerly of Nicollet, died Friday, April 26, 2019, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 16, 2019, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Nicollet, with Fr. Samuel Perez celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Nicollet on Wednesday May 15 from 4-7 p.m. with the rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. The visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Rose Marie is survived by her children, Michael (Barbara), Martha Lee, Samuel (Jerilyn Clark), Patrick, Mary, Jacob (Cyndi) and Jane; eleven grandchildren: Lisa Holt, Lacie Laurent; Savannah Zins (Scott Penick), Vanessa Zins (Phillip Solberg), Francesca Zins; Harrison Limond (Ashley Wagner), Joseph, Hamish, Madeline, Phoebe and Rocky Limond, and three great-grandchildren, Orion Hansen, Erxi Lu Reising and Gideon Solberg; and godson Mark Zins. Additionally, she is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert; her parents, a sister, Dorothy Poncin, son-in-law Rocky Holt and numerous brothers and sisters in law. She is the last of that family generation. Rose Marie Johannes was born on April 10, 1917, in Nicollet to Edward C. & Clara M. (Langenfeld) Johannes. She attended Nicollet School and graduated in 1934. Rose Marie then went to the College of St. Catherine, graduating in 1938 with a bachelor’s degree in English. She later earned her Master’s Degree in English and Language Arts from Mankato State University. While fond of Shakespeare, her thesis was written on “Alice in Wonderland”, another favorite piece of literature. Rose Marie’s first teaching position was in Magnolia, MN. After a year, she came back to Nicollet, married, and taught English at Nicollet Public School for 40 years, influencing many residents of Nicollet. Concurrent with her teaching career, she raised seven children. During her tenure at NPS, Rose Marie produced numerous school plays, coached speech/debate for contests, was active in the teacher groups including the union, and was awarded Teacher of the Year in Nicollet. She was active in the National Honor Society. Rose Marie was united in marriage at St. Paul’s Catholic Church to Hubert J. Zins on August 28, 1941, and they had seven children. Her greatest culinary skill was baking bread, which she did every weekend. She also excelled at making raspberry jam from the family raspberry patch. Rose Marie was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, and was active in many local groups, and at the diocesan level. She sang in the church choir and taught religious education. She was fond of and talented at working on word puzzles, especially crossword puzzles. Rose Marie was a Nicollet resident most of her life. She always was most comfortable at home and enjoyed having company. Not having been a big talker, she loved just sitting and listening to the conversations going on around her. She will be missed by her friends and family. The family wishes to thank the staff at Oak Hills Living Center for the loving and compassionate care they provided their mother.
