His father passed away at a young age which resulted in Mert helping run the farm and keeping the family together. Mert met his wife Claudia (Ottmar) at a wedding dance in Burt, ND. His love of dancing continued throughout his entire life, and was a self-proclaimed polka champion. Mert and Claudia were married on December 4, 1960. They had five children, Burnell (Jackie), Kevin (Lesley), Terry (Nicole), Alan (Darla) and Joleen (Kurt) Waldbillig. Mert attended country school north of Heil, in Grant County, ND. He began working for local farmers, and after his marriage, worked for several local businesses, spending many years working for grain elevators, working for every elevator in Mott at one time or another. After retiring, he served as head usher at Zoar Congregational Church in Mott for a number of years, taking great pride in greeting everyone with a smile and a personal touch. He was well known for his amazing sense of humor and loved to tell a good story. He had the ability to light up a room upon his entrance. He always had an abundant garden, and loved to can his produce. Cooking was also something he enjoyed, especially making the Thanksgiving turkey with stuffing and the Easter ham. Being an avid sports fan, Mert and his brother played baseball for the local Heil team during their younger years. He remained an avid baseball fan throughout his life with the Minnesota Twins being his favorite team. Nothing meant more to him than following his children’s sporting events, and later his grandchildren’s sporting events.
