Joni’s Obituary Joni (Bowers) Hertel (November 9, 1947 – April 1, 2019) Joni L. Hertel, 71, Gregory SD, formally of White River, SD, joined her Heavenly Father on April 1, 2019. Joni passed peacefully with family at her side at the Pierre Care and Rehabilitation Center, Pierre, SD. Services will be held May 18th, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church in White Lake. Urn attendants are Roy Muller and Robert Rada-Ortega. Final inurnment will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery, beside the love of her life Julius, at a later date. Joni was born in Mitchell, SD to Harold and Pearl (Nightingale) Bowers on November 9th, 1947. She was baptized at the Methodist church in White Lake on an Easter Sunday. Joni had two sisters, Peggy and Charlene. They all enjoyed many summers with cousins who visited in White River. She attended school and graduated in 1965 from White River. Joni spent her career cooking for others. Many years were spent as a dietary manager in Long Term Care in White River, SD and Lodi, CA. Joni also cooked at several restaurants in WY and SD. Joni married Melvin Rada in 1966, they later divorced. Joni met her beloved husband, Julius “Pops” in Moorcroft, WY, and after three years of marriage they moved to Lodi, CA, where they lived for seven years. At this time, they returned to South Dakota. Pops and Joni were married 28 years Joni enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing cards and was famous for her cooking, especially her pies. Joni was highly intelligent and enjoyed games that challenged her intellect. Joni is survived by her blended family: Mona (Dave) Taggart of Gregory, SD; Tina (Doug) Muller of Mosher, SD; Dina Schultz and Jerry Brackin of Wahpeton, ND; Dana Rada of Winner, SD and Cory Rada of Springfield, SD; Julie Smith of Gillette, WY; Amanda Ball of Gillette, WY and Hope Oien of Gillette WY; 15 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; sister- Peggy Moran of Mitchell, SD and numerous nieces and nephews. Joni was preceded in death by her father and mother, Harold and Pearl (Nightingale) Bowers; her husband Julius Hertel; her sister Charlene Nash and one grandson Christopher Oien. Joni will always be loved and remembered as a strong, independent woman who loved deeply. Read More
