Winston Kaminer died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. Affectionately known as “Winnie” to all who loved him, he was born on November 6, 1940 in Columbia, South Carolina, to Glenn Augustus Kaminer and Muriel Winston Kaminer. He was graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria in 1959 and attended the University of Virginia where he was a member of the Phi Psi fraternity. After serving in the 82nd Airborne division of the U.S. Army, Winnie made Charlottesville his home. He ran Kaminer Printing from 1969 to 1977, and subsequently worked in sales for several local businesses including Thomson McKinnon Securities, Cargo Furniture and Re/Max Realty Specialists. Genuinely warm and immensely charismatic, Winnie put everyone who met him at ease with his irreverent humor and contagious smile. A natural athlete, he learned to ride horses as a child from Miss Ellie Wood Keith at Camp Yonahnoka in North Carolina, and later in life earned his colors from the Farmington Hunt Club. He was an avid skier, tennis player and golfer as well as a religious New York Times Sunday crossword-puzzler. He loved to travel, but his favorite spot was with his wife on the porch of their Virginia home surrounded by several overfed animals. Winnie is survived by his loving wife Laney Morrell Kaminer; his children, Farley “Krystie” Kaminer McDonough and Kerri Winston Kaminer both of Manitou Springs, Colo.; Read Alexander “Alex” Lunsford, Jr. of Leesburg, Va.; and Pepper Lunsford Binner of Arlington, Va., as well as his nine grandchildren, Darwin Kaminer Fredrickson, Atticus Charles Fredrickson, Megan Anne Craig, Aspen Rose Craig, Charlotte Preston Lunsford, John Alexander Lunsford, Henry Winston Lunsford, Christian Binner III and Helen Gage Binner. Winnie will be dearly missed by his family and all the many friends he leaves behind. A celebration of Winnie’s life will be held in Charlottesville in late June. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA at PO Box 7047 Charlottesville, VA 22903 or the Hospice of the Piedmont at 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway Charlottesville, VA 22911 or hopva.org.
