Charles E. Underwood 83, passed from this life and into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 23, 2019. Charles (Chuck) was born on January 20, 1936 in Bloomington to the late Leslie and Nellie (Mercer) Underwood. He was a lifelong resident of Bloomington. Chuck graduated from Bloomington High School in 1954 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1954-58. He spent his tour of duty as a radar operator on the Cruiser USS Northampton, a command ship in the Navy’s North Atlantic Fleet. During his service, he was fortunate to be able to visit and tour many European ports of call. He is survived by his wife Peggy (Bradley) Underwood and his children Lisa (Randy) Lent; and Douglas (Kim) Underwood. He has 4 grandchildren that he loved spending time with, Karissa Fleetwood, Mark Underwood, Rachel Lent and Em Underwood and two great-grandchildren Rydleigh and Deacon Fleetwood. He is survived by his brothers, Bob Underwood and John (Elaine) Underwood of Bloomington and his sisters, Rosalie Stevens of Iowa, Donna Acuff and Linda (Dick) Needy of Bloomington as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Charlotte King; Martha Burns; Analie Clay; Nancy Blair and a brother, Bill Underwood. Also preceding him in death were his sister-in-law Kathleen Underwood and brothers-in-law John Stevens, Howard (Red) King, Bud Burns, Robert D. Blair and Wilford Acuff. Chuck loved spending time with his family, gardening, reading poetry and books on Monroe County history. He loved watching classic movies, especially Westerns. Always the avid gardener, he had plans for his spring garden and was enlisting the help of his son and grandson to carry on the tradition. He will be profoundly missed by his family. At his request, there will be no visitation. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. A special thank you to the IU Health Bloomington Hospice House staff for their excellent care.
