Ray’s Obituary Ray Charles Hayes, son of the late Charles B. and Vera L. Hayes, was born December 19, 1944, in Springfield, IL. He grew up there, attended Lanphier High School, and graduated from SIU Carbondale with a degree in business. He was a member of the Illinois Air National Guard. He married Sharon Roberts in January 1968. He was blessed with two children; Kelly and Grant. Ray had a career in finance. It included banking and money management. He retired from PIMCO after 18 years as a vice president. Ray was born again in the early 1980s. He served as an elder at Central Presbyterian Church. He loved to tell people about Jesus. Ray had a great love for Golden Retrievers. He cherished vacations with his family. He loved to follow the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Blues. One could always find him with a book or newspaper in his hands. He began running in the late 1970s. It became one of his greatest passions. He recorded his miles daily/yearly and could tell anyone how many he had run to date. He ran 40+ marathons, including Pike’s Peak, Paris, New York City, and Boston. He was a member of the “6:20 Running Club” for years. His legacy lives on in the lives of his family: Kelly (Jeff) and their children Caleb and Benjamin of Carol Stream, IL. Grant (Kristi) and their children Holden and Carter Mae of Littleton, CO. Ray is survived by his loving sister, Susan (Earl) of Greenwood, IN. and their children Cindy (Scott) and Greg (Sandy) and their children and grandchildren. Services: Funeral service at Greentree Community Church, 100 Kirkwood Place, Kirkwood, Saturday, 10:00 a.m. Interment Bellerive Gardens.
