Nina B Hatton November 22 1928 February 19 2018

Nina’s Obituary Nina Ruth Barwick Hatton, 90, of Stuart, Florida truly lived her life to the fullest. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, fishing and later in life, tennis. She loved spending time with family and friends and spoiling her pets. She never knew a stranger, often striking up a conversation with someone while waiting in line or offering a hug to anyone who needed it. Those who knew her would surely agree, she was a hugger. On February 19, 2019, Nina passed away peacefully at her daughter Melinda’s home. Born in Thomasville, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Mattie Cummins and the late Henry Barwick and stepdaughter of the late Andy Cummins. She was also the sister of the late Betty Barwick Hatton. Nina spent most of her early life enjoying her family’s farm and travelling from Georgia to Florida since her parents were in the produce business. Pahokee, Florida is where she met her husband, the late Joseph Leon Hatton, Jr. Together they raised three children: Joe III, Sharon and Melinda. Together they blessed her with nine grandchildren: Wynnette, Kara, Edwin, Chris, Chad, Joah, Javan, Wynsum and Marnie. Then together they blessed her with nine great-grandchildren: Ethan, Kylie, Jaxon, Delilah, Sophie, Kieran, Isabella, Alyssa and Stefana. Nina often helped at the Hatton family farm, Hatton Brothers, Inc., doing secretarial duties and answering phones. Then in the early seventies, she and Joe moved to Rocky Point in Stuart, Florida – also known to many as Port Salerno. She and Joe spent many days fishing on the Nina B. with family and friends, with Nina often cooking their prized catch for anyone who was hungry. She and Joe hosted many people at their Rocky Point home and the grandkids visited almost every weekend and holiday. Also, their many nieces and nephews often visited. Joe passed away in 1978 and Nina remained in Stuart until 1985, volunteering for the Republican Party and Melinda’s schools. She got great enjoyment out of volunteering at South Fork High School and she wore her SFHS apron almost every time she cooked. As Nina always said, “Go, Bulldogs!” In 1985, Nina moved herself and her beloved pets to Tequesta, Florida. This was when she discovered her love for tennis. She joined a small tennis club and began playing competitively. She was always the oldest player on her team, but she didn’t care. Everyone who knew her would say she was young at heart. Her favorite sayings were, “You’re as young as you feel,” and “There’s only one alternative to another birthday.” It was this zest for life that kept her on this earth for ninety years. She made many great friends while playing competitive tennis for ten years. While living in Tequesta, she also took many trips and cruises, often travelling with Melinda and her family. She also took several trips with her late sister Betty, her cousins, Becky and Katie and her sister-in-law, Buttons. In 2003, Nina suffered the stroke that took away her independence. This was heartbreaking to all who knew her. However, she still had a zest for life after the stroke. The doctors told her family she would probably suffer another stroke within a couple of years and to spend as much time with her as possible. Once again, in that Nina B. way, she showed them and lived for another fifteen years. And even though she was bedbound the last five years of her blessed life, she was still Nina B. She loved the family pets, enjoyed takeout from Cracker Barrel (chicken and dumplings of course) and still flashed that Nina B. smile. However, three weeks prior to her death it was obvious to her family she was getting tired. Throughout those three weeks, Nina was told she could let go, but she was a fighter and lasted until February 19, 2019. On this day, Nina took her last breath after Melinda told her it was okay for her to go back to Thomasville where she could run and play under the big oak tree. She will be dearly missed by all who loved her. A private service will be held in Thomasville, Georgia. Arrangements are under the direction of Treasure Coast Seawinds, Stuart, Florida. Read More
